Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Ethiopia has 12 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. All of them ranked by how hard they are to reach, with year, region, nearest airport and travel advice.

Ethiopia has 12 UNESCO World Heritage Sites: 10 cultural and 2 natural. The oldest, Simien National Park and the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, were among the first sites inscribed anywhere, in 1978. The newest, Melka Kunture and Balchit, was added in 2024.
Below they are ranked from the easiest to reach to the hardest. The ranking weighs three things: how far each site is by road from the nearest working airport, what the roads are like, and current government travel advice. The last has become the deciding factor. As of 25 September 2026, five of the twelve sit in regions where the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advises against all travel, or all but essential travel.
| Rank | Site | Inscribed | Type | Region | Nearest airport | By road from the airport |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Melka Kunture and Balchit | 2024 | Cultural | Oromia | Addis Ababa | About 53 km |
| 2 | Tiya | 1980 | Cultural | Central Ethiopia | Addis Ababa | About 88 km |
| 3 | Harar Jugol | 2006 | Cultural | Harari | Dire Dawa | About 57 km |
| 4 | Konso Cultural Landscape | 2011 | Cultural | South Ethiopia | Arba Minch | About 87 km |
| 5 | Bale Mountains National Park | 2023 | Natural | Oromia | Robe | About 36 km to Dinsho |
| 6 | Gedeo Cultural Landscape | 2023 | Cultural | South Ethiopia | Hawassa | About 100 km to Dilla |
| 7 | Lower Valley of the Omo | 1980 | Cultural | South Ethiopia | Jinka | About 190 km to Omorate |
| 8 | Fasil Ghebbi, Gondar | 1979 | Cultural | Amhara | Gondar | About 15 km |
| 9 | Rock-Hewn Churches, Lalibela | 1978 | Cultural | Amhara | Lalibela | About 18 km |
| 10 | Simien National Park | 1978 | Natural | Amhara | Gondar | About 114 km to Debark |
| 11 | Lower Valley of the Awash | 1980 | Cultural | Afar | Semera | About 137 km to Hadar |
| 12 | Aksum | 1980 | Cultural | Tigray | Axum | About 7 km |
Road distances are our own measurements on OpenStreetMap. Some of the sites high on the list, like Gondar and Aksum, are physically close to an airport and still rank low, because of the travel advice for their region.

Ethiopia's newest World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2024, is about 50 kilometres south of Addis Ababa, on the Awash River. It is a sequence of Stone Age sites going back about 1.7 million years, with stone tools and fragments of early human skulls. Balchit, a little under 7 kilometres away, is an outcrop of obsidian, the volcanic glass the toolmakers used. There is a museum on site.
It is the easiest of the twelve to reach: a half-day or day trip from the capital on surfaced roads.
Tiya is a field of 36 monuments, including 32 carved stelae, about 88 kilometres south of Addis Ababa. Nobody has fully deciphered the symbols carved on them. It sits on the main road south, so most travellers see it on the way to Arba Minch rather than as a trip of its own. See our Tiya guide.

The walled old town of Harar, inscribed in 2006, is about 57 kilometres by road from Dire Dawa airport. It is one of the easiest sites to combine with a flight, and it is outside the regions covered by the current travel advice. Our Harar guide covers the walled city and the hyena feeding, and our Harar and Dire Dawa tour runs it.
Stone-walled hilltop towns and dry-stone terraces built over more than 400 years, about 87 kilometres south of Arba Minch airport. Visits are arranged through the tourist information centre in Karat, with a compulsory local guide. Our Konso guide explains the terraces, the walled towns and the waga grave markers.
One of Ethiopia's two natural sites, inscribed in 2023, and the best place to see the Ethiopian wolf. The park headquarters at Dinsho is about 36 kilometres from Robe airport. The Sanetti Plateau climbs above 4,000 metres, so you need a 4×4, warm clothes and time to adjust to the altitude. See our Bale Mountains guide.
Inscribed in 2023, Gedeo is a farmed landscape on the eastern side of the Rift Valley, where enset and coffee grow in layers beneath tall native trees. Thousands of stone stelae, some about 8 metres high, have been recorded at around 100 sites across it. Dilla, in the middle of the area, is about 100 kilometres by road from Hawassa airport. Gedeo is the home of Yirgacheffe coffee, and our coffee origin guide covers the region.
The lower Omo is famous for fossils: over 50,000 have been identified, including 230 of early humans and their ancestors. The site is a stretch of river valley rather than a single place you can stand in.
Getting there is the hard part. Omorate, near the river's lower end, is about 190 kilometres of rough road from Jinka airport. The river runs into Lake Turkana on the Kenya border, and the UK advises against all travel within 10 kilometres of that border, including the lake shore. Most visitors experience the Omo Valley through its communities rather than its fossil sites. Our Omo Valley guide and seven-day Omo Valley tour cover the region.

These five include several of Ethiopia's best-known sites. As of 25 September 2026, the UK advises against all travel to the Amhara and Tigray regions, and against all but essential travel to most of Afar. It also warns that flights in northern Ethiopia can be suspended or cancelled at short notice. Check your own government's current advice before planning any of them.
The royal enclosure founded by Emperor Fasilides in the 17th century: castles and palaces inside a 900-metre wall, about 15 kilometres from Gondar airport. Gondar is in the Amhara region. See our Gondar guide.
Eleven medieval churches carved down into solid rock, still in daily use, about 18 kilometres from Lalibela airport. Lalibela is in Amhara, and flights to Lalibela were reported suspended on 24 September 2026 because of fighting near the town, with no resumption date announced. Our Lalibela guide covers the churches.
The other natural site: escarpments, gelada monkeys and Walia ibex, with Ras Dashen, Ethiopia's highest peak, at about 4,550 metres. The park was on UNESCO's danger list from 1996 to 2017. Debark, the park headquarters, is about 114 kilometres by road from Gondar airport, and the park is in Amhara. See our Simien trekking guide.
The lower Awash is where Lucy, a 3.2 million-year-old Australopithecus afarensis, was found at Hadar on 24 November 1974. Hadar is about 137 kilometres by road from Semera, in the Afar region, where the UK advises against all but essential travel and reports that foreign nationals currently can't fly into Afar's airports.
You can see Lucy without going there. The original skeleton is in the National Museum of Ethiopia in Addis Ababa.
The ancient capital of the Aksumite kingdom, with its giant carved stelae. One of them, taken to Rome, was returned in pieces in 2005. Aksum is about 7 kilometres from its airport, which would make it easy in normal times, but it is in Tigray. The UK advises against all travel to Tigray, and civilian flights to and from the region were suspended on 22 September 2026. Our Ark of the Covenant guide covers Aksum's history.
Six more Ethiopian sites are on UNESCO's tentative list, the step before nomination: Dirre Sheikh Hussein, Holqa Sof Omar, the sacred landscapes of Tigray, the cultural heritage of Yeha, the Lake Tana island monasteries and wetland, and a proposed extension of Simien National Park.
Twelve: ten cultural and two natural. The two natural sites are Simien National Park, inscribed in 1978, and Bale Mountains National Park, inscribed in 2023. The newest is Melka Kunture and Balchit, inscribed in 2024.
Melka Kunture and Balchit, about 50 kilometres south of the city, followed by Tiya, about 88 kilometres south. Both work as day trips on surfaced roads.
With current travel advice, a southern and eastern route works best. See Melka Kunture and Tiya on the way south from Addis Ababa, continue to Arba Minch and Konso, then fly from Addis Ababa to Dire Dawa for Harar. That is four World Heritage Sites in ten days, and you can add Bale or the Omo Valley with more time. Lalibela, Gondar, Simien and Aksum are a classic northern circuit, but all four are currently in regions under UK advice against all travel.
Check before you plan. Lalibela is in the Amhara region, where the UK advised against all travel as of 25 September 2026, and flights were reported suspended on 24 September 2026 because of fighting near the town.
Simien National Park, inscribed in 1978 and on UNESCO's danger list from 1996 to 2017, and Bale Mountains National Park, inscribed in 2023 and best known for the Ethiopian wolf.
In the National Museum of Ethiopia in Addis Ababa. Lucy was found at Hadar, in the Lower Valley of the Awash World Heritage Site, but the original skeleton is kept in the capital.
