How many days do you need in Ethiopia?
A day trip from Addis Ababa works well on a layover or a free day in the capital. Three days is enough for a short trip such as Harar and Dire Dawa, the Rift Valley lakes or the coffee region. For the northern historic route (Bahir Dar, Gondar and Lalibela) or the Omo Valley, plan on seven days. Nature and birding trips run from 9 to 14 days. To combine the north, the south and the Danakil, allow two to three weeks.
There are no direct domestic flights between Lalibela, Gondar and Axum. Every connection goes through Addis Ababa, so we often mix flights with overland drives to save time.
How much does an Ethiopia tour cost?
Day trips from Addis Ababa start from $55 per person. Multi-day tours range from $345 to $1,599 per person, depending on the route, group size, season and hotel level. Most packages include the guide, driver, vehicle, fuel, entrance fees, accommodation and meals. International flights, tips and personal expenses are not included.
When is the best time to visit Ethiopia?
The main travel season runs from October to March, when the rains have ended, the highlands are green and the roads are dry. September brings the end of the rains and the Meskel festival. January is busy with Ethiopian Christmas (Genna) and Timkat, so book early for Lalibela and Gondar. The Danakil Depression is best visited between November and February, when temperatures are lower.
