Taste Ethiopia, from injera and spices to coffee and honey wine
Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee and has one of the most distinctive cuisines in the world. On this private tour of about 5 hours, a local guide takes you to the places where people in Addis Ababa really eat and drink: a historic coffee house, the spice lanes of Merkato, a traditional restaurant and a tej house for honey wine.
You taste injera with a spread of meat and vegetarian dishes, learn how berbere and mitmita are blended, and take part in a full coffee ceremony, from roasting the green beans to the third cup. Vegetarian, vegan and fasting food is easy to find in Ethiopia, so tell us your diet and we plan around it.
Pick up from your hotel at about 11am. Start in Piassa at Tomoca, a coffee house roasting beans since 1953, for a macchiato in the Italian style. Walk into Merkato, one of the largest open air markets in Africa, to the spice sellers, where your guide explains berbere, mitmita, niter kibbeh butter and the herbs of the Ethiopian kitchen.
Lunch at a traditional restaurant: injera with beyaynetu, a colourful platter of fasting dishes, plus tibs or kitfo for meat eaters. Visit a tej house to taste honey wine. End with a full coffee ceremony, with fresh roasted beans, frankincense and popcorn, before drop off at your hotel. Ask us to switch to an evening version with dinner and live traditional music and dance.
Price: on request. The price depends on the number of travellers and whether you choose the lunch or the evening version. Tell us your date and hotel and we reply within 2 hours with a confirmed price.

The tour runs every day, all year. On Wednesdays and Fridays, and during the long fasts before Easter and Christmas, many Ethiopians eat only vegan fasting food, which is a great time to taste it. Meat dishes are still available.
Tell us about any allergies or dietary needs when you book. Come hungry.
Some dishes are, especially those made with berbere or mitmita. Your guide orders a mix of mild and spicy dishes, and you can always ask for less spice.
