Overview
Short on time but want to see Lalibela? This day trip uses the morning flight from Addis Ababa to Lalibela and the afternoon flight back, giving you most of a day among the rock hewn churches, a UNESCO World Heritage Site carved out of solid rock more than 800 years ago.
You visit the northern and eastern groups of churches and Bete Giyorgis with a licensed Lalibela church guide, with lunch in town. Flight times change with the season, so we confirm the exact schedule when you book. If you can spare a night, our 2 day Lalibela tour is more relaxed.

Detailed Itinerary
Morning: Fly to Lalibela, Northern Churches
Early pick up from your hotel in Addis Ababa for the morning flight to Lalibela, about an hour in the air. Your guide meets you at the airport for the 30 minute drive up to town. Visit the northern group of churches: Bete Medhane Alem, the largest monolithic church in the world, Bete Maryam with its painted ceilings, Bete Meskel, Bete Denagel and the twin churches of Bete Golgotha and Bete Mikael. Lunch at a local restaurant with views over the mountains.
Afternoon: Eastern Churches, Bete Giyorgis, Fly Back
Walk through the tunnels and trenches of the eastern group: Bete Amanuel, Bete Merkorios, Bete Abba Libanos and Bete Gabriel Rufael. Finish at Bete Giyorgis, the cross shaped church carved down into the rock, the most famous image of Ethiopia. Transfer to Lalibela airport for the afternoon flight to Addis Ababa and drop off at your hotel.
Travel Advice
Current travel advice (October 2026): the UK and US governments currently advise against all travel to the Amhara region, which includes Lalibela, Gondar, Bahir Dar and the Simien Mountains. Check your own government’s latest advice and make sure your travel insurance covers you before you book. Best Time to Go
October to March is dry and clear. Genna (7 January) and Timkat (19 January) are unforgettable in Lalibela, but flights and hotels fill up early, so a day trip is hard to arrange on those dates. Book flights as early as you can in any season.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is one day really enough for Lalibela?
It is enough to see all eleven churches in town with a guide. You do not have time for Yemrehanna Kristos or Asheten Maryam, which need our 2 or 3 day Lalibela tours.
What happens if the flight is delayed or cancelled?
We watch the flight times and change the order of visits if needed. If the return flight is cancelled, we help you book a hotel in Lalibela and rebook your flight.
What should I wear?
Clothes that cover shoulders and knees, and shoes you can take off easily, as you remove them inside every church. Bring socks for the stone floors.
