Ethiopia car rental prices for 2026: self-drive from $50 a day, with a driver from $55. What each rate includes, fuel costs, and what to ask before you sign.

Car rental in Ethiopia with Drive Ethiopia starts from $50 a day for self-drive and from $60 a day for a car with a driver. Those are starting rates. Your quote depends on the vehicle, the route and the number of days. The two options also include different things: a car with a driver includes fuel, while on self-drive you pay for the fuel you use and leave a refundable security deposit.
This guide covers what each rate includes, what it leaves out, and what to ask any rental company before you sign. That way you can compare quotes on what they cover, rather than on the headline number.
| Service | Starting rate | Fuel | Driver |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-drive | From $50 per day | You pay, full to full | You drive |
| Car with a driver | From $60 per day | Included with a driver | English-speaking driver included |
| Airport transfer | From $35 per way | Included | Driver included |
The starting rate is the floor, not the average. A sedan for Addis Ababa and a 4×4 for the Omo Valley are both car rentals, but the vehicle, the distance and the road change the price. Ask for a quote for your actual route.
These terms apply to every Drive Ethiopia rental, self-drive or with a driver:
Both kinds of insurance are in the rental rate, not added at the counter. If another company quotes you a lower daily figure, check whether both are in it.
A car with a driver comes with fuel, insurance and a professional, English-speaking driver. Airport pickup can be added on request.
Two things are not in the daily rate:
You can book a driver for a single day, a week, or a full trip across the country. There is no strict minimum. For long, mountainous or unpaved routes such as Lalibela, the Simien Mountains, the Danakil or the Omo Valley, the vehicle will be a 4×4. Our 4×4 guide covers which vehicle suits which road.
Self-drive rental includes insurance and a full tank at handover. Airport handover is available on request. Plan for these:
Self-drive suits confident drivers who are staying in Addis Ababa or travelling on paved, well-marked routes. Outside the main corridors we recommend a driver.
These are the line items that make two quotes with the same daily rate end up far apart. Not every company handles them the same way, so ask about each one.
| Cost item | How it is usually handled | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel | Included with a driver. On self-drive, full to full and paid by you | Is fuel in the rate? If not, what is the fuel policy at return? |
| Driver's meals and accommodation | Charged on overnight trips outside the capital | Is it in the rate, or itemised separately? |
| Insurance | Included at Drive Ethiopia. Check whether another company includes it | Are comprehensive and third-party cover both included? |
| Security deposit | Required for self-drive, refundable | How much, how is it held, and when is it returned? |
| Vehicle class | The vehicle is one of the things that sets the price | Is the quote for the vehicle the route actually needs? |
| Distance and route | The route is one of the things that sets the price | Is there a mileage limit, and what happens if you go over it? |
| One-way hire | Possible between cities, depending on availability | Is there a charge to return the car from another city? |
| Tips | Not included | None. This one is your call |
The mileage and one-way rows are worth asking every company about, because they are where quotes most often differ. Ours are set in your quote for your route.
Fuel prices in Ethiopia are set by the government rather than by each station. In the adjustment that took effect on 23 April 2026, announced by the Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration and reported on 5 May 2026, petrol rose to 167.50 birr a litre and white diesel to 180.46 birr a litre. We found no newer official adjustment as of 22 October 2026. Prices change from time to time, so check the current figure before you budget.
Availability matters as much as price. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office's travel advice, updated on 21 October 2026, says fuel availability is currently limited across Ethiopia, with long queues and shortages at petrol stations reported nationwide. It warns that this may cause delays, particularly outside Addis Ababa, and advises allowing extra time for journeys.
On self-drive, that is your time and your planning. With a driver, filling up and planning fuel stops along the route is the driver's job.
Our rental rates are quoted in US dollars, while fuel at the pump is priced in birr. Our guide to money in Ethiopia covers cash, cards and exchange.
Some costs never show up as a line on the quote. They come from the roads and the clock.
The first is driving hours. The FCDO advises avoiding driving after dark anywhere outside Addis Ababa, because vehicles often have no lights and livestock may stray onto the roads. That caps how far you can go in a day, and on a long route it can add a night.
Then there are accidents. The same advice says driving standards and vehicle maintenance are often poor, with frequent accidents, especially in Addis Ababa and on the Addis Ababa to Djibouti road. Drivers involved in accidents can face severe punishments, including custodial sentences and fines. On self-drive, the driver is you.
Some routes carry their own risk. The FCDO reports irregular armed clashes between ethnic groups in Afar Region and Somali Regional State, in particular along the main Addis Ababa to Djibouti road (A1) and the surrounding areas. It also reports an increase in roadblocks across Amhara region. Check the current advice for every region on your route before you price it.
On the headline rate, self-drive starts $5 lower. That gap closes fast, because the self-drive rate leaves out fuel and the driver rate includes it.
For a few days in Addis Ababa, self-drive can come out cheaper. On a long trip with overnight stops, the driver's meals and accommodation are the main extra cost. Set against them are the fuel, the navigation, the checkpoints and the after-dark rule. Our comparison of car hire with a driver and self-drive goes through the decision trip by trip.
If you are not sure, ask us to price both. We will lay them out side by side for your route.
With Drive Ethiopia, self-drive starts from $50 a day and a car with a driver from $60 a day. The final price depends on the vehicle, the route and the number of days.
With a driver, the driver's meals and accommodation on overnight trips outside Addis Ababa, and tips. On self-drive, the fuel you use, and a refundable security deposit is held. Insurance is included in both.
At Drive Ethiopia, yes. Comprehensive insurance and third-party insurance are both included in every rental, under a signed contract. With other companies, ask whether both are in the rate.
No. Fuel is included when you hire a car with a driver. On self-drive the policy is full to full, so you pay for the fuel you use.
After the adjustment that took effect on 23 April 2026, petrol was 167.50 birr a litre and white diesel 180.46 birr a litre. Prices are set officially and change, so check the current figure. The FCDO also reports fuel shortages and long queues nationwide.
For self-drive, yes. It is a refundable security deposit to cover potential damage, and we give you the amount with your quote.
