Gedeo Cultural Landscape

UNESCO-listed coffee forests and ancient stelae fields in the home of Yirgacheffe coffee.

What is Gedeo Cultural Landscape

The Gedeo Cultural Landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southern Ethiopia, around the town of Dilla and the Yirgacheffe coffee area. It protects a living landscape of shaded coffee and enset gardens farmed by the Gedeo people, together with fields of carved standing stones.

The landscape is a layered forest garden: tall native shade trees above, coffee in the middle and enset (false banana) close to the ground, all managed by Gedeo families over many generations. Scattered across the hills are megalithic sites such as Tutu Fela and Chelba-Tutitti, where hundreds of carved stelae stand together in the grass.

Why Visit Gedeo Cultural Landscape

This is the place to see where some of the world’s most famous coffee is grown, walk through village gardens with local farmers, and stand among stelae fields that very few travellers ever reach. It was inscribed by UNESCO in 2023, so it is still quiet and unspoiled.

History and Significance of Gedeo Cultural Landscape

The Gedeo people have shaped this agroforestry system over centuries, guided by their traditional Baalle governance and customary rules that protect trees, water and sacred sites. The stelae fields are much older and their makers are still debated by archaeologists. UNESCO recognised the area as a World Heritage Site in 2023 for this combination of living farming culture and ancient monuments.
