Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Lush Sidama town surrounded by shade-grown coffee forests, eco-lodges and colobus monkeys.
Yirgalem is a small highland town in Ethiopia's Sidama region, about 40 to 50 kilometres southeast of Hawassa. It sits at the heart of one of the world's most famous coffee-growing areas, where coffee grows under the shade of native forest trees, and it is a peaceful base for coffee farm tours, forest walks and Sidama culture.
Green hills of coffee, enset (false banana) and forest surround Yirgalem. Smallholder farmers grow most of the coffee, which is processed at local washing stations and exported as Sidama coffee, known for its bright, floral and fruity flavours.
Eco-lodges such as Aregash Lodge, set on a family coffee plantation, offer traditional tukul-style rooms, forest trails and birdlife including colobus monkeys.
If you love coffee, Yirgalem is where you see it from forest to cup: picking, washing, drying on raised beds, roasting and the traditional coffee ceremony. The cool climate, birdsong and slow pace also make it a restful stop between the Rift Valley lakes and the south.
Yirgalem was for a time an administrative centre of the former Sidamo province before Hawassa grew into the regional capital. The Sidama people, whose region gained its own statehood in 2020, celebrate their new year with Fichee-Chambalaalla, inscribed by UNESCO in 2015 on the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The coffee harvest runs roughly from October to January, the best time to see picking and processing. The dry season from November to February also offers the easiest walking.
