Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Old royal seat of Shewa on a dramatic escarpment, with geladas and a rare endemic bird.
Ankober is a historic highland town about 170 kilometres northeast of Addis Ababa, on the edge of the escarpment that drops to the Afar lowlands. It was a royal seat of the Shewan kings and is known today for its views, history and the rare Ankober serin.
A hilltop lodge stands on the site of the old royal palace, with sweeping views down the escarpment. Old churches, eucalyptus forest and cliff edges where geladas feed surround the town, and the cliffs are home to the Ankober serin, a small finch found almost nowhere else.
Ankober combines history, scenery and wildlife in one short trip from Addis Ababa. It is a great choice for an overnight escape, for birdwatchers chasing a true Ethiopian endemic, and for anyone curious about the story of Menelik II.
Ankober was the capital of the Kingdom of Shewa in the 18th and 19th centuries, under rulers such as Sahle Selassie. The future Emperor Menelik II spent part of his early life here before the capital moved south, eventually to Addis Ababa. The Ankober serin was only described by scientists in the 1970s.
October to March is the best time, with dry weather and clear views. Mornings can be misty, so allow time for the weather to clear.
Ankober is around three to four hours by road from Addis Ababa, via Debre Birhan, then about 40 kilometres east on a winding mountain road.
One long day is possible from Addis Ababa, but one night gives time for walks, birding and sunset views.
Stay at the lodge on the palace hill, or in Debre Birhan, which has more hotel choice.
Warm layers for cool highland evenings, a rain jacket, walking shoes and binoculars.
Ankober is in the Amhara region, where some areas have been affected by insecurity in recent years. Check your government’s current travel advice and confirm the route with a reputable local operator.
Pair Ankober with Guassa Community Conservation Area for wolves and geladas, or stop at Debre Birhan on the way.
