Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

A prehistoric site on the Awash River and a medieval rock-hewn church, south of Addis.
Melka Kunture is a prehistoric site on the upper Awash River, about 50 kilometres south of Addis Ababa, where stone tools and fossils show over a million years of human history. Nearby Adadi Maryam is a rock-hewn church carved in the style of Lalibela.
At Melka Kunture, a small site museum and shelters protect excavation areas full of ancient stone tools. A short drive away, Adadi Maryam is a church cut down into the rock, with windows, pillars and passages carved from a single block of stone, and still used by the local community.
This pair makes an easy and fascinating day trip from Addis Ababa: early human history in the morning and a medieval rock church in the afternoon. It is ideal for travellers who cannot reach Lalibela, and it combines well with the Tiya stelae on the same road.
Excavations at Melka Kunture have uncovered tools from many stages of the Stone Age, with the oldest dated to more than a million years ago. Adadi Maryam is traditionally linked to the time of King Lalibela, around the 12th to 13th century, and is one of the southernmost rock-hewn churches in Ethiopia.
Both sites can be visited all year. October to May is the most comfortable, with dry roads and sunny days.
Melka Kunture is about one hour south of Addis Ababa on the road towards Butajira. Adadi Maryam is a short detour from the same road. Most visitors go by private car with a driver.
One full day covers Melka Kunture, Adadi Maryam and the Tiya stelae together.
Most visitors return to Addis Ababa the same evening.
Sun protection, water and comfortable shoes. Dress modestly for the church, and bring small birr notes for entry and donations.
This is a regular day trip from Addis Ababa and is generally safe. Travel with a local guide to get the most from both sites.
The Tiya stelae lie further along the same road, and the Wonchi crater lake can be added on a longer trip.
