Community-protected highland plateau with Ethiopian wolves and gelada monkeys, north of Addis.
Guassa Community Conservation Area is an Afro-alpine plateau in Menz, in the highlands north of Addis Ababa. It is one of the best places in Ethiopia to see the endangered Ethiopian wolf and large troops of gelada monkeys, and it has been protected by the local community for centuries.
The plateau sits at around 3,200 to 3,700 metres, covered in tussock grass, giant lobelias and heather. Ethiopian wolves hunt rodents across the open grassland, geladas graze in big herds along the escarpment, and highland endemic birds are easy to find.
Guassa offers wolf and gelada sightings within a day’s drive of Addis Ababa, without the longer journey to Bale or the Simien Mountains. It is also a fine example of community conservation, where local people decide how the land is used.
For around four hundred years the people of Menz have managed Guassa through a traditional system known as Qero, which controls when grass can be cut and animals grazed. This custom kept the plateau in good condition and is the reason so much wildlife survives here today.
October to February brings dry weather and clear views. Wolves and geladas can be seen all year, but the rainy season from June to September makes tracks muddy and cold.
Guassa is about 260 kilometres north of Addis Ababa, a drive of around five hours via Debre Birhan and Mehal Meda. A 4×4 with a driver is recommended for the final stretch.
Plan two days with one night on or near the plateau, so you can be out at dawn when wildlife is most active.
Accommodation is simple: a basic community lodge near the plateau or local hotels in Mehal Meda. Camping can also be arranged.
Warm layers, a hat and gloves for cold nights, a waterproof jacket, binoculars and sturdy walking shoes.
Guassa is in the Amhara region, where parts have been affected by insecurity in recent years. Check your government’s current travel advice and confirm road conditions with a reputable local operator before you go.
Combine Guassa with Ankober and Debre Birhan on a short highland loop, or with Debre Libanos on the way north.
