Addis Ababa Conference Venues: A Planner’s Guide to the AICC, AU, UNECA and Skylight

Addis Ababa conference venues compared: the AICC, UN Conference Centre, African Union and Skylight, with capacities, airport distances and delegate visas.

Addis Ababa is the headquarters city of the African Union and of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, and it hosts well over 100 embassies. That is why it is often called Africa's diplomatic capital, and why it has conference capacity most African capitals don't. The largest dedicated venue, the Addis International Convention Center, opened in March 2025 with two halls of 3,000 to 4,000 people each and room for up to 10,000. The UN Conference Centre seats 864 in its main room, or 1,338 with its second room linked, and the African Union's plenary chamber seats 2,505.

For a regional conference, the realistic shortlist is those three plus the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel next to the airport. Millennium Hall, often listed as the city's biggest venue, is currently being demolished and rebuilt.

One date matters more than any other. Addis Ababa hosts COP32, the UN climate conference, in November 2027, with an estimated 50,000 participants. If your event is anywhere near that month, plan around it.

The venues compared

Venue Largest room Breakout space From Bole by road Accommodation on site
Addis International Convention Center (AICC) Two halls of 3,000 to 4,000 each, up to 10,000 in total Eight small and medium halls About 15 minutes, by the venue's own estimate A hotel of 1,000+ rooms is planned, not yet open
UN Conference Centre (UNCC-AA) 864, or 1,338 with two rooms linked 36 rooms in total, including four rooms of 115 and nine caucus rooms of 20 to 55 About 7 km No. Several hotels are next door
African Union Conference Center Plenary chamber of 2,505 32 conference rooms About 9 km The AU's own hotel, used for summits
Ethiopian Skylight Hotel Largest hotel ballroom in the city, by the hotel's own description Eight meeting rooms About 2.5 km Yes, 1,024 rooms
Millennium Hall Formerly up to 25,000 Formerly four conference rooms About 2.5 km No

Distances are our own road measurements from the airport on OpenStreetMap, except the AICC, where the venue publishes a drive time. Traffic sets the real journey time, so build buffers into delegate schedules.

Addis International Convention Center

The AICC is the newest and largest dedicated conference venue in Ethiopia. It was inaugurated on 1 March 2025 on a 40 hectare site in the east of the city, in the CMC area of Lemi Kura sub-city.

Its two large halls take 3,000 to 4,000 people each, with eight smaller meeting halls and an exhibition hall, and the whole centre can hold up to 10,000. There is secure parking for more than 2,000 vehicles and an East-West light rail line nearby. A five-star hotel of more than 1,000 rooms is planned on site but is not open yet, so delegates currently stay elsewhere and are bussed in.

It suits anything large: association congresses, trade exhibitions, and events that need several plenary-size rooms at once. Every bag is security-checked on entry, which adds time to morning arrivals. Allow for that.

UN Conference Centre (UNCC-AA)

The UN Conference Centre sits at the headquarters of the UN Economic Commission for Africa on Menelik II Avenue, in Kazanchis. It is a working diplomatic venue, built for multilingual intergovernmental meetings.

Conference Room 1 seats 864, and linked electronically to Conference Room 2 the two take 1,338. Rooms 3 to 6 seat 115 each, there are nine caucus rooms of 20 to 55, and two briefing rooms of 60 and 44. The main rooms have simultaneous interpretation in six languages. The historic Africa Hall, where the Organisation of African Unity was founded, seats 458, and there are 2,100 square metres of exhibition space.

The UNCC-AA describes itself as being right next to several three-to-five star hotels. Kazanchis is the city's business district, and the Hilton and Radisson Blu are both in the area, so delegates can walk from hotel to venue. Check booking terms directly, because the centre's priority is UN and intergovernmental meetings.

African Union Conference Center

The AU's headquarters complex was inaugurated on 28 January 2012. Its plenary chamber seats 2,505, and a separate conference building holds 32 conference rooms. The complex includes its own hotel, used to house heads of state and delegations during AU summits.

The AU's own meetings come first. The complex is also used as a conference centre by African and diaspora businesses, so it is worth asking, but ask early. AU summits are held every February, most recently on 14 and 15 February 2026.

Ethiopian Skylight Hotel

The Skylight, owned by Ethiopian Airlines, sits next to Bole International Airport, about 2.5 kilometres from the terminal by road, with a free 24-hour airport shuttle. It has 1,024 rooms, plus 97 more in its hotel inside the airport terminal.

The hotel describes its ballroom as the largest hotel ballroom in Addis Ababa, and it has eight meeting rooms. For a conference of a few hundred to a couple of thousand, it solves the hardest problem in one move: delegates sleep, eat and meet in one building, with no daily transfers. The trade-off is distance from the city centre, Kazanchis and the AU.

Millennium Hall

Millennium Hall, near Bole on Airport Road, was built in 2006 and could hold up to 25,000 people. It was damaged by fire on 26 June 2025, and demolition and redevelopment began at the end of February 2026 as part of Ethiopia's preparations for COP32. No reopening date has been published, so don't plan around it.

Planning around the calendar

Two things fill Addis Ababa and are worth checking before you fix dates:

  • AU summits, held every February. Heads of state and their delegations take a large share of the city's hotels.
  • COP32 in November 2027. Addis Ababa hosts the UN climate conference, with around 50,000 expected participants, so hotels, transport and the large venues will be committed long in advance.

The Ethiopian festival calendar is also worth checking. Meskel in late September closes the roads around Meskel Square, and January, with Genna and Timkat, is peak travel season.

Visas for delegations

Most international delegates need a visa, and the tourist visa is the wrong one. Ethiopia's official eVisa portal, evisa.gov.et, has a separate workshop and conference category. Delegates apply there with a recent photo, a passport valid for at least six months, and an invitation letter from the organiser.

Event organisers' guidance says the invitation letter is addressed to Ethiopia's Immigration and Citizenship Service and gives the event name, start and end dates, and venue. The visa on arrival service at Bole is issued as a tourist visa only, so delegates should apply online in advance.

Check the current fee and processing time on evisa.gov.et rather than relying on figures quoted elsewhere. Our e-Visa guide covers the portal and the common mistakes.

Where delegates should stay

The answer depends on the venue. For the UNCC-AA, stay in Kazanchis and walk. For the Skylight, stay in the hotel. For the AICC and the AU, accept a daily transfer and stay where the hotel stock is, in Bole or Kazanchis. Our guide to where to stay in Addis Ababa compares the areas.

One security note for delegates' free time. The UK government names Bole Medhanealem, Bole Atlas and Meskel Square among areas of Addis Ababa where crime against foreigners has risen. Brief delegates to use booked transport or app-based taxis in the evening rather than walking.

How we support conferences

We work with organisers on the parts of a conference that happen outside the hall:

  • Venue sourcing: we shortlist and book the venue that fits your numbers and dates.
  • Hotel room blocks for delegates near your venue.
  • Delegate airport transfers from $35 each way, with meet and greet at Bole and flight tracking, so a delayed flight doesn't leave anyone waiting.
  • Group transport during the event, with minibuses, buses and coaches between hotels and the venue.
  • Pre- and post-event tours, from an Addis Ababa city tour to day trips and longer itineraries across Ethiopia.

FAQ

Why is Addis Ababa called Africa's diplomatic capital?

It is the headquarters city of the African Union and of the UN Economic Commission for Africa, and it hosts well over 100 embassies. That concentration of continental and international bodies is why so many regional conferences are held there.

What is the largest conference venue in Addis Ababa?

The Addis International Convention Center, opened in March 2025. It has two halls of 3,000 to 4,000 people each, eight smaller halls, and capacity for up to 10,000 people. Millennium Hall was larger but is being demolished and rebuilt.

Do conference delegates need a visa for Ethiopia?

Most international delegates do. They apply on evisa.gov.et under the workshop and conference category, with an invitation letter from the organiser. The visa on arrival at Bole is issued as a tourist visa only, so it is the wrong route for delegates.

What should the conference invitation letter include?

Event organisers' guidance says it is addressed to Ethiopia's Immigration and Citizenship Service and states the event name, start and end dates, and venue. Check the current requirements on evisa.gov.et before you issue letters.

How far are the conference venues from Bole Airport?

The Skylight Hotel is about 2.5 kilometres by road, the UN Conference Centre about 7, and the African Union about 9. The AICC says it is about 15 minutes away. Traffic decides the real time, so allow buffers.

When should I avoid scheduling a conference in Addis Ababa?

Check the AU summit dates, held every February, and avoid November 2027, when Addis Ababa hosts COP32 with an estimated 50,000 participants. Major festivals in September and January also fill hotels.
