Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Restored royal palace grounds with throne halls, regional pavilions, gardens and a zoo.
Unity Park is a 20-hectare heritage park inside the historic palace compound in the Arat Kilo area of Addis Ababa, opened to the public on 10 October 2019. It lets visitors explore buildings used by Ethiopian rulers since Emperor Menelik II, including throne and banquet halls, alongside pavilions for Ethiopia's regions, landscaped gardens and a zoo.
The park occupies the grounds of the palace complex founded by Menelik II in the late 19th century, which served Ethiopian heads of state for more than a century. Restored buildings include Menelik’s residence, the throne hall and the banquet hall.
Newer features include regional pavilions showcasing the cultures of Ethiopia’s regions, a botanical garden, an aquarium and a zoo known for its black-maned lions.
Unity Park opens doors that were closed to the public for generations. It is the best single place in Addis Ababa to see royal history up close, enjoy well-kept gardens in the city centre and get an overview of Ethiopia’s diversity.
Menelik II established his palace on this hill after founding Addis Ababa in the 1880s. Later emperors, the Derg military government and subsequent governments all used the compound. In 2019 a major restoration opened part of it as Unity Park, with heritage buildings, gardens and new attractions.
Unity Park is open most days of the week, with a weekly closing day for maintenance. Mornings are calmer; weekends and holidays are busier.
| Period | What to expect |
|---|---|

| Dry season | Best for the gardens. |
| Holidays | Busy with local families. |
