Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Centuries-old protected forest with giant junipers, hiking trails and colobus monkeys near Addis.
Menagesha Suba Forest Park is a protected highland forest about 40 kilometres west of Addis Ababa, often described as one of the oldest protected forests in Africa. Tradition credits its protection to Emperor Zara Yaqob in the 15th century. It covers about 2,500 hectares of juniper and Afrocarpus forest on the slopes of Mount Wechecha, with walking trails, colobus monkeys and endemic birds.
The park climbs the flanks of Mount Wechecha, an old volcano west of the capital. Its trails wind through tall native trees, including African juniper and Afrocarpus (podocarpus), with mosses and lichens hanging from the branches and open meadows higher up.
It is a favourite weekend hike for Addis Ababa residents and one of the best places near the city to see Menelik’s bushbuck, black-and-white colobus monkeys and highland birds.
Menagesha offers real forest walking just an hour from Addis Ababa, in cool mountain air, without the long drives of the national parks. It is ideal for acclimatising before treks in the Simien or Bale Mountains, for birders, and for anyone who wants a quiet nature day.
Menagesha has been treated as a royal or state forest for centuries, with its protection traditionally attributed to Emperor Zara Yaqob in the 1400s. Later rulers continued to guard it, and it is now managed as a forest park. Like much of the highlands, its edges have been planted with eucalyptus, but the core remains native forest.
October to February is dry and clear, the best time for hiking. The rainy season from June to September makes trails muddy and views cloudy, though the forest is at its greenest.
| Period | What to expect |
|---|---|
| October to February | Dry trails and clear views. |
| March to May | Warm with occasional showers. |
| June to September | Rainy, muddy and misty. |
Menagesha Suba is about 40 kilometres west of Addis Ababa. The drive takes around one to 1.5 hours depending on traffic, with the last section on a rougher road to the park gate. A car with driver is the practical option; public transport does not reach the gate easily.
A day trip from Addis Ababa is ideal: two to five hours of hiking plus the drive.
| Trip type | Suggested time |
|---|---|
| Short walk | Two hours on the lower forest trails. |
| Full hike | Four to five hours towards Mount Wechecha. |
| Combined day | Forest walk plus Addis Ababa sights. |
