Lake Ziway is the largest of the seven lakes in the Ethiopian Rift Valley, covering an area of approximately 434 square kilometers. Lake Langano, also located in the Ethiopian Rift Valley, is known for its crystal-clear waters and is a popular destination for swimming and water sports. Both Lake Ziway and Lake Langano are home to a rich variety of bird species, making them excellent spots for birdwatching enthusiasts. Lake Ziway is famous for its population of hippos, which can often be spotted bathing in the shallow waters near the lake’s shores. Lake Langano is one of the few lakes in Ethiopia where swimming is safe due to the absence of hippos and crocodiles.
Abijatta Shalla National Park, located between Lake Ziway and Lake Langano, is renowned for its diverse wildlife, including zebras, gazelles, and warthogs. The park is also home to over 300 species of birds, making it a paradise for bird lovers and ornithologists. Abijatta Shalla National Park encompasses two lakes: Lake Abijatta, which is a saltwater lake known for its flamingo population, and Lake Shalla, which is a volcanic lake with hot springs. Lake Shalla is one of the deepest lakes in Ethiopia, reaching depths of up to 260 meters. Visitors to Abijatta Shalla National Park can enjoy breathtaking views of the lakes, go on guided safaris, and even camp overnight in designated areas within the park.
Start your 3 days trip by driving from Addis Ababa to Lake Ziway, which is approximately a 3-hour drive. Upon arrival, you will check into a lakeside resort or lodge for your accommodation. Spend the day exploring Lake Ziway, which is the largest of the Rift Valley lakes in Ethiopia. Take a boat tour of the lake and visit the various islands, such as Tulu Gudo and Debre Sina, which are home to several bird species and monasteries. At the lake shore, you will enjoy a picnic or have lunch at one of the local restaurants that serve fresh fish from the lake. In the evening, relax by the lake and enjoy the beautiful sunset.
After breakfast, drive to Lake Langano, which is approximately a 1.5-hour drive from Lake Ziway. Check into a lakeside resort or lodge for your accommodation. Spend the day at Lake Langano, known for its clear waters and sandy beaches. Enjoy swimming, sunbathing, and various water activities such as kayaking or paddleboarding. Take a leisurely walk along the lakeshore and explore the surrounding nature. In the evening, have a bonfire by the lake and enjoy a BBQ dinner.
After breakfast, drive to Abijatta Shalla National Park, which is approximately a 1-hour drive from Lake Langano. Upon arrival, hire a local guide and start exploring the park. Visit Lake Shalla, which is one of the deepest lakes in Africa and offers stunning views of the surrounding volcanic landscape. Take a hike to the viewpoint overlooking Lake Abijatta, which is a saline lake known for its flamingo population. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the park while observing the wildlife, including zebras, gazelles, and various bird species. In the afternoon, drive back to Addis Ababa to conclude your trip.
