Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Volcano with a crater lake and a historic monastery on top, an easy day trip from Addis.
Mount Zuqualla is an extinct volcano south of Addis Ababa, near Bishoftu, rising to almost 3,000 metres. Its summit crater holds a sacred lake and the monastery of Zuqualla Maryam, linked to the revered saint Abo, Gebre Menfes Kidus.
A track climbs through farmland and juniper forest to the crater rim. Inside the crater lies a calm lake circled by trees, with the monastery and its church nearby. From the rim there are wide views over the Rift Valley and the Bishoftu lakes.
Zuqualla is one of the most rewarding day trips from Addis Ababa: a hike, a crater lake, a living monastery and big views in one outing. It is quieter than most sites near the capital and feels far from the city.
Ethiopian Orthodox tradition holds that Saint Gebre Menfes Kidus, known as Abo, lived and prayed on Zuqualla. The monastery has been a pilgrimage site for centuries, and thousands of pilgrims gather here on his major feast days.
October to May is best, with dry tracks and clear skies. The rainy season from June to September can make the road muddy.
Zuqualla is about 65 kilometres from Addis Ababa, around one and a half to two hours by car via Bishoftu. A 4×4 is best for the rough track up the mountain.
Zuqualla is a full day trip from Addis Ababa, including time on the rim and a stop at the Bishoftu lakes.
Most visitors return to Addis Ababa. For an overnight stay, Bishoftu has several lakeside resorts.
Good walking shoes, a warm layer for the summit, sun protection, water and a picnic lunch. Dress modestly for the monastery.
Zuqualla is a regular day trip from Addis Ababa and is generally safe. Go with a guide or driver who knows the mountain track.
Combine Zuqualla with the Bishoftu crater lakes on the same day, or with Adadi Maryam and Melka Kunture on a wider trip south of Addis.
