Overview
Tigray has more than 120 rock hewn churches, many of them older than Lalibela and still in use. Most sit high on cliffs and mountain tops in the Gheralta range, reached by hikes and short climbs. This 4 day tour visits the most beautiful of them, then continues west to Yeha, one of the oldest buildings in Africa, and to Axum, the capital of an ancient empire.
The tour starts in Mekele and ends in Axum, both with daily flights to and from Addis Ababa. It is private and flexible, so you choose how much climbing you want to do.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Mekele, Wukro Cherkos and Abraha we Atsbeha
Fly from Addis Ababa to Mekele. Drive north to Wukro Cherkos, a rock church at the roadside, then to Abraha we Atsbeha, with its fine paintings and treasures. Arrive at Gheralta in the afternoon. Overnight at the lodge.
Day 2: Abuna Yemata Guh and Maryam Korkor
Morning climb to Abuna Yemata Guh, a church cut into a rock spire with painted domes. Afternoon hike to Maryam Korkor and Daniel Korkor, with views across Gheralta. Overnight at the lodge.
Day 3: Yeha Temple and Drive to Axum
Drive west via Adwa. Stop at Yeha, a pre Aksumite stone temple about 2,700 years old. Optional detour to Debre Damo monastery (men only, reached by a rope climb). Arrive in Axum in the afternoon. Overnight in Axum.
Day 4: Axum and Fly to Addis Ababa
Visit the stelae park, the royal tombs, the Queen of Sheba’s bath and palace, the Ezana stone and St Mary of Zion church. Afternoon flight to Addis Ababa.
Travel Advice
Current travel advice (October 2026): the UK and US governments currently advise against all travel to the Tigray region, which includes Mekele, Gheralta and Axum. Flights to Axum are currently suspended. Check your own government’s latest advice and make sure your travel insurance covers you before you book. We follow the situation on the ground every day, run this route only when we judge it safe, and will talk to you about other dates or another itinerary if conditions change.

Best Time to Go
October to March is dry and ideal for church hikes. Avoid the midday heat on climbs; we start early. Meskel (late September) and Timkat (January) are colourful in Axum.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to travel in Tigray now?
Several governments currently advise against all travel to Tigray (see the travel advice above). We check the situation before every departure and will only run this tour when we judge it safe.
Do I need to climb?
Only Abuna Yemata Guh and Debre Damo need climbing. All other churches are reached by a walk or a hike.
Can I add the Danakil?
