Lake monasteries, royal castles and rock churches in five days
Short on time but want to see the best of the north? This 5 day tour covers three highlights of Ethiopia’s historic route: the island monasteries of Lake Tana and the Blue Nile Falls near Bahir Dar, the 17th century royal castles of Gondar, and the rock hewn churches of Lalibela.
We use domestic flights for the long legs and a private car for the scenic drive from Bahir Dar to Gondar, so you spend your time at the sites, not on the road. It is a private tour that starts and ends in Addis Ababa on any date you choose.
Morning flight from Addis Ababa to Bahir Dar. Boat trip on Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile, to visit Ura Kidane Mehret and Azwa Maryam monasteries on the Zege peninsula, with painted walls and old manuscripts. Sunset over the lake. Overnight in Bahir Dar.
Morning drive to the Blue Nile Falls (Tis Abay) and a short walk over a 17th century Portuguese bridge to the viewpoint. Continue north to Gondar (about 3 hours) through farmland. Overnight in Gondar.
Visit the Royal Enclosure of Fasil Ghebbi, a UNESCO site with castles of the Gondarine kings, the bath of King Fasilides, and Debre Birhan Selassie church with its famous ceiling of painted angels. Afternoon flight to Lalibela. Overnight in Lalibela.
Full day with a local guide at the eleven rock hewn churches, from Bete Medhane Alem to the cross shaped Bete Giyorgis. In the evening, enjoy a traditional coffee ceremony. Overnight in Lalibela.
Optional morning hike to Asheten Maryam monastery, or a visit to the local market, then fly back to Addis Ababa. Transfer to your hotel or connect to your international flight.
Current travel advice (October 2026): the UK and US governments currently advise against all travel to the Amhara region, which includes Lalibela, Gondar, Bahir Dar and the Simien Mountains. Check your own government’s latest advice and make sure your travel insurance covers you before you book. We follow the situation on the ground every day, run this route only when we judge it safe, and will talk to you about other dates or another itinerary if conditions change.
Price: on request. This tour runs as a private trip on any date you choose. The price depends on group size, hotel level and season, so we quote each trip individually. Tell us your dates and number of travellers and we reply within 2 hours, with a full itinerary and quote within 24 hours.
Tip on domestic flights: if you fly into Ethiopia on Ethiopian Airlines, you can usually get large discounts on domestic flights. Book them on the same booking reference or send us your ticket and we book them for you.

October to March is the dry season and the best time for the north. The Blue Nile Falls are fullest from August to October. Timkat in Gondar on 19 January is a highlight if your dates allow.
Yes. Add one or two days from Gondar to see gelada monkeys and the escarpment views. See our Gondar and Simien tour.
It is enough for the highlights. With 7 to 10 days you can add Axum and the Simien Mountains. See our 10 day historic route tour.
Yes, but Gondar to Lalibela is a full day drive. Flying saves time; driving shows you more of rural Ethiopia.
