Mount Zuqualla

Volcano with a crater lake and a historic monastery on top, an easy day trip from Addis.

What is Mount Zuqualla

Mount Zuqualla is an extinct volcano south of Addis Ababa, near Bishoftu, rising to almost 3,000 metres. Its summit crater holds a sacred lake and the monastery of Zuqualla Maryam, linked to the revered saint Abo, Gebre Menfes Kidus.

A track climbs through farmland and juniper forest to the crater rim. Inside the crater lies a calm lake circled by trees, with the monastery and its church nearby. From the rim there are wide views over the Rift Valley and the Bishoftu lakes.
