Ethiopia's largest park, a remote wetland wilderness on the route of a vast antelope migration.
Gambela National Park is Ethiopia's largest national park, covering roughly 5,000 square kilometres of wetlands, grasslands and riverine forest in the far west of the country near South Sudan. It forms part of the Great Nile Migration Landscape, where aerial surveys in 2023 counted around six million antelope, including white-eared kob, tiang and reedbuck, moving between South Sudan and Gambela in what researchers describe as the largest land mammal migration on Earth.
Established in 1974, the park lies in the lowlands along the Baro, Gilo and Akobo rivers. Seasonal floods create vast swamps and grasslands that support Nile lechwe, white-eared kob, tiang, buffalo, elephants and giraffes, and more than 300 bird species, including the shoebill.
It is wild in the true sense: there are no tourist lodges or marked game-drive circuits, and visits are expeditions rather than safaris.
Gambela is for experienced wildlife travellers and photographers who want somewhere almost nobody goes. The chance to witness part of the great kob migration, find shoebills in the papyrus and explore the cultures of the Anuak and Nuer peoples makes it unlike anywhere else in Ethiopia.
The park was created in 1974, largely to protect the Nile lechwe and white-eared kob. For decades it received little investment and faced pressure from farming, poaching and regional conflict. In 2023 coordinated aerial surveys of South Sudan’s Boma and Bandingilo parks and the Gambela landscape revealed the scale of the migration, drawing new conservation attention to the region.
The dry season from roughly December to April gives the best access, when tracks are passable and wildlife gathers near water. The migration’s timing follows the rains and varies from year to year, so expert local advice is essential.
| Period | What to expect |
|---|---|
| December to April | Dry season; best road access. |
| May to November | Rains and floods; much of the park is inaccessible. |
| Migration timing | Varies with rainfall; check with local experts. |
Fly from Addis Ababa to Gambela, around 1.5 hours. From Gambela town, the park lies to the west along rough tracks; a 4×4, a local scout and fuel for long distances are essential. Overland from Addis Ababa takes two days via Jimma or Nekemte.
Plan at least three to five days including flights, as distances are long and conditions unpredictable.
| Trip type | Suggested time |
|---|---|
| Minimum | Three days including flights. |
| Recommended | Five days for wildlife and birding. |
| Expedition | A week or more with camping. |
Gambela town has basic hotels. Inside the park, visits rely on camping with full equipment.
Bring full camping gear if staying in the park, strong insect repellent, malaria prophylaxis (ask your doctor), a water filter, sun protection and binoculars. It is hot and humid year round.
At the time of writing, the UK government advises against all travel to the Gambela region, and other governments urge caution. Do not plan a visit without checking current official advice. We will only consider trips here when conditions allow and will tell you honestly if they do not.
Gambela is remote from Ethiopia’s other attractions. Jimma and the coffee forests of Kaffa lie on the overland route back towards Addis Ababa.
It is Ethiopia's largest park and part of the Great Nile Migration, with huge herds of white-eared kob and rare birds such as the shoebill.
Surveys in 2023 counted around six million antelope across South Sudan and Gambela, which researchers describe as the largest land mammal migration on Earth.
Fly from Addis Ababa to Gambela, then travel by 4x4 into the park.
The UK currently advises against all travel to the Gambela region. Always check the latest official advice before planning.
