Pre-Aksumite stone temple in Tigray, among the oldest buildings in Ethiopia.
Yeha is an ancient site in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia, about 50 kilometres east of Axum near Adwa. Its Great Temple, built of finely cut stone well over 2,500 years ago, is one of the oldest standing buildings in the country.
Yeha is best known for its Great Temple, a tall, roofless rectangular building of precisely fitted limestone blocks. Nearby are the remains of a large palace complex known as Grat Beal Gebri, and the church of Abuna Aftse, which keeps a small collection of old manuscripts and carved stones from the site.
Yeha takes the story of northern Ethiopia back before Axum. Seeing the temple’s masonry, still standing after more than two and a half millennia, is a highlight for anyone interested in ancient history, and the site fits easily into a day between Axum, Adwa and the Tigray churches.
The Great Temple is generally dated to around the 7th century BC. It belongs to the period before the rise of the Aksumite kingdom, when the northern highlands had close cultural links with South Arabia, visible in the temple’s style and in inscriptions found in the area. Yeha later became a Christian site, and the church of Abuna Aftse is associated with one of the Nine Saints.
The dry season from October to March is the most comfortable time to visit Tigray. The rains from June to September can make side roads slow.
| Period | What to expect |
|---|---|
| October to March (dry) | Best road conditions and clear skies. |
| June to September (rains) | Greener, with slower roads. |
