Home of the Al-Nejashi Mosque, linked to the first Muslims who found refuge in Ethiopia.
Negash is a village in eastern Tigray, north of Mekele, best known for the Al-Nejashi Mosque. It is regarded as one of the oldest Islamic sites in Africa and is linked to the first followers of the Prophet Muhammad who found refuge in the Aksumite kingdom.
The mosque stands on a hill above the village, with a burial ground that tradition holds contains the graves of early Muslim companions. It remains a place of pilgrimage for Muslims from Ethiopia and beyond.
Negash tells one of Ethiopia’s most remarkable stories of welcome and coexistence. It is an important stop for travellers interested in Islamic heritage, and it fits well into a Tigray circuit with the rock churches of Gheralta and Wukro.
Around 615 AD, a group of early Muslims fled persecution in Mecca and crossed the Red Sea to the Aksumite kingdom, where the king, known in Arabic as Al-Najashi, gave them protection. This event is often called the First Hijra. The mosque at Negash has been rebuilt several times and was damaged during the recent conflict in Tigray, with restoration work following.
October to March is the most comfortable time to visit Tigray. The rains from June to September can make roads slow.
Negash is about 60 kilometres north of Mekele on the road to Adigrat, around one hour by car. From Addis Ababa, fly to Mekele and continue by road.
Allow one to two hours for the mosque, best combined with Wukro and Gheralta on the same trip.
Stay in Mekele, Wukro or the lodges of the Gheralta area.
Modest clothing covering arms and legs, a headscarf for women, sun protection and water.
Negash is in the Tigray region, which has been affected by conflict in recent years. Check your government’s current travel advice and confirm local access with a reputable operator before you travel.
Combine with the Wukro rock churches, Gheralta, Debre Damo and Yeha on a wider Tigray circuit.
We do not run a scheduled tour to Negash yet. Tell us your dates and we will build one around it.
