Quiet Lake Tana town with 17th-century Jesuit ruins, old churches and great birding.
Gorgora is a small lakeside town on the northern shore of Lake Tana, about 60 kilometres south of Gondar. It is known for the ruins of a 17th-century Jesuit mission and royal palace, the old church of Debre Sina Maryam, peaceful lake views and excellent birdwatching, and it is now home to the Gorgora Eco Resort.
Gorgora sits on a peninsula that pushes into Lake Tana, Ethiopia’s largest lake and the source of the Blue Nile. It is a calm, green place of fishing boats, papyrus reed boats and acacia shoreline, very different from busy Bahir Dar at the southern end of the lake.
The area holds layers of history, from medieval monasteries to the Portuguese and Jesuit presence of the early 1600s, when Gorgora briefly served as a royal centre before Gondar was founded.
Come to Gorgora for slow travel: a night or two by the lake after the castles of Gondar, sunsets over the water, boat rides to island churches and quiet walks among ruins few tourists see. Birders will find pelicans, kingfishers, fish eagles and many waterbirds along the shore.
In 1607 Emperor Susenyos granted land at Gorgora to Jesuit missionaries, who built a seminary and, between 1627 and 1629, a stone church with Portuguese-style decoration. Around 1621 the Jesuits also built a royal palace for Susenyos a few kilometres away, known as New Gorgora.
After Orthodoxy was restored, Emperor Fasilides moved the court to Gondar and the Jesuit buildings were abandoned. Much of what remained was damaged by an earthquake in the 1950s, leaving the evocative ruins you see today. The church of Debre Sina Maryam, with its painted interior, remains an active place of worship.
October to March brings dry weather and clear skies over the lake, ideal for boat trips and birding. November to February is excellent for migratory birds.
| Period | What to expect |
|---|---|
| October to March | Dry season; best for boats and walks. |
| November to February | Peak for migratory waterbirds. |
| June to September | Rainy season; green but muddy tracks. |
Fly from Addis Ababa to Gondar (about 1 hour), then drive south roughly 60 kilometres to Gorgora, around 1.5 hours. Gorgora is also an easy add-on to a Gondar and Simien Mountains itinerary. Lake boats have historically linked Gorgora with Bahir Dar, but schedules are irregular, so we arrange private boats where needed.
One night is enough to see the ruins and churches; two nights let you add a boat trip and a lazy lake day.
| Trip type | Suggested time |
|---|---|
| Day trip from Gondar | Ruins, church and lunch by the lake. |
| One night | Adds sunset, birding and an early boat trip. |
| Two nights | Slow lake break after Gondar or the Simiens. |
The Gorgora Eco Resort, built under Ethiopia’s national Gebeta Lehager development programme, offers lakeside lodges. Simpler guesthouses are available in town, and Gondar has many more hotels.
Bring sun protection, a hat and binoculars for birding. Wear modest clothing and slip-on shoes for church visits, and a light jacket for evenings on the lake.
Gorgora is in the Amhara region. At the time of writing, several governments, including the UK, advise against all travel to Amhara. Check the latest official advice before planning; we only run trips in the region when conditions allow.
Gondar’s royal castles are about 1.5 hours north, and the Simien Mountains National Park beyond. Across the lake lie Bahir Dar, the Zege Peninsula monasteries and the Blue Nile Falls.
