Gamo highland villages of tall bamboo houses and fine cotton weaving above Arba Minch.
Dorze and Chencha are communities in the Gamo highlands of southern Ethiopia, about 30 kilometres above Arba Minch. The Dorze people are known for their tall, beehive-shaped houses woven from bamboo and for their fine cotton weaving.
The Dorze villages sit high in the cool, green Gamo highlands, among enset (false banana) gardens and terraced fields. Their houses are woven from bamboo and thatched into a tall dome shape, and weaving is central to local life, with colourful cotton shawls and cloth made on hand looms. Chencha is the nearby market town, with a busy weekly market.
A visit to Dorze is one of the most rewarding cultural stops in southern Ethiopia: you can step inside a traditional house, watch weavers at work and see how enset is turned into bread. The cool highland air and wide views over the Rift Valley make a pleasant contrast to the hot lowlands of Arba Minch and the Omo Valley.
The Dorze are one of the Gamo peoples of the southern highlands, long known across Ethiopia for their skill as weavers. Many Dorze weavers moved to Addis Ababa and other towns, but the highland villages remain the heart of the community and its traditions, including the customary Gamo gathering places for decision-making.
The dry months from October to March are best, when the steep road up from Arba Minch is easier and the views are clearer. The highlands are cool all year and can be misty in the rains.
| Period | What to expect |
|---|---|
| October to March (dry) | Clearer views and easier roads. |
| April to September | Greener, cooler and often misty. |

Most travellers stay in Arba Minch. There is also simple community lodging in the Dorze area for those who want to spend the night in the highlands.
Warm layers, as the highlands are much cooler than Arba Minch, plus a rain jacket, comfortable shoes and small birr notes for the visit and any purchases.
Dorze and Chencha are welcoming, well-visited communities. Ask before photographing people, travel with a local guide, and check your government’s current travel advice before you go.
Arba Minch, Nech Sar National Park and Lakes Abaya and Chamo are just below. Konso and the Omo Valley continue the route south.
