Endemic birds, the Borana singing wells and a black salt crater in Ethiopia's far south.
Yabelo is a town in the Borana lowlands of southern Ethiopia, on the road to Kenya. The area is famous for the Yabelo Wildlife Sanctuary, the singing wells of the Borana people and the El Sod salt crater.
The landscape is open acacia savanna with termite mounds and cattle herds. Here the Borana water their livestock at deep wells while singing in chains, two rare endemic birds live in the sanctuary, and at El Sod a crater lake produces black salt collected by hand.
Yabelo and Borana offer something different from the rest of the south: pastoral culture, unique birds and dramatic scenery. It is a must for birdwatchers and a rewarding extension to an Omo Valley or southern lakes tour.
The Borana are an Oromo people organised by the Gadaa system, a traditional form of self-government recognised by UNESCO as intangible heritage. Their deep wells, known as tula wells, have been dug and maintained by communities for generations.
The dry season from December to March is best, when the wells are busiest. Birding is good all year.
Yabelo is about 570 kilometres south of Addis Ababa, around two days by road via Hawassa. It also links well with Arba Minch and Konso for a southern loop.
Allow two days to see the wells, the sanctuary and El Sod without rushing.
Yabelo has simple hotels and a lodge, the best base for the area.
Light clothes, a hat, sun protection, sturdy shoes for the crater walk, binoculars and plenty of water.
Yabelo is visited by birders and tour groups, but conditions can change in the southern border areas. Check your government’s current travel advice and travel with an experienced local guide.
Combine with Konso and Arba Minch, or with the Gedeo coffee landscape and Hawassa on the way south.
