A medieval church built inside a cave near Lalibela, older than the famous rock churches.
Yemrehanna Kristos is a medieval church built inside a large cave about 40 kilometres from Lalibela. Made of alternating layers of wood and stone in the old Aksumite style, it is one of the finest and best-preserved early churches in Ethiopia.
The church stands in the mouth of a cave, protected from the weather for centuries. Its walls show the classic Aksumite pattern of wooden beams and stone, with carved windows and a painted wooden ceiling inside. At the back of the cave lie the remains of pilgrims who came here to die.
Many travellers call Yemrehanna Kristos the highlight of their Lalibela visit. The drive through highland villages, the short walk up to the cave and the quiet atmosphere make it feel very different from the busy rock churches in town.
The church is named after King Yemrehanna Kristos of the Zagwe dynasty, who ruled before King Lalibela. It is usually dated to around the 11th or 12th century, making it older than the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, and it shows how Aksumite building traditions carried on into the Zagwe period.
October to March is the best time, with dry roads and clear skies. During the rains from June to September the road can be slow.
Yemrehanna Kristos is about one hour by car from Lalibela, followed by a short uphill walk of around 15 to 20 minutes to the cave. Go by private car with a driver.
Allow a half day from Lalibela. Most travellers add it as an extra morning or afternoon to a Lalibela stay.
Stay in Lalibela, which has a wide choice of hotels and lodges.
Comfortable shoes for the walk, a torch for the dark interior, sun protection and water. Dress modestly and be ready to remove your shoes.
Lalibela is in the Amhara region, where parts have been affected by insecurity in recent years. Check your government’s current travel advice and confirm access with a reputable local operator.
Combine with the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, the mountain monastery of Asheten Maryam and the cave church of Na’akuto La’ab.
