Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Five volcanic crater lakes and lakeside resorts, under an hour from Addis Ababa.
The Bishoftu crater lakes are a group of volcanic lakes in and around the town of Bishoftu, also called Debre Zeyit, about 45 kilometres southeast of Addis Ababa. The main lakes are Bishoftu, Hora, Bishoftu Guda, Kuriftu and the seasonal Cheleklaka, with Babogaya nearby, and the area is popular for lakeside resorts, birdwatching and weekend breaks.
Bishoftu sits at about 1,900 metres on the edge of the Rift Valley. Each lake fills an old volcanic crater, so many are ringed by steep green walls with paths along the rim. Some are lined with resorts and cafes; others remain quiet and rural.
Lake Hora (Hora Arsedi) is sacred to the Oromo people and is the main site of the Irreecha thanksgiving festival, one of the largest gatherings in Ethiopia.
It is the easiest nature escape from Addis Ababa: an hour on the expressway takes you from city traffic to crater rims, birdsong and lake views. It suits families, couples and anyone with a spare day, and works well as a first or last stop on a southern road trip.
The town grew in the 20th century as a retreat for Addis Ababa residents and as home to the Ethiopian Air Force’s main base. Its old name, Debre Zeyit, means Mount of Olives in Ge’ez, while Bishoftu is the Oromo name now used officially.
Irreecha at Hora Arsedi is an ancient Oromo celebration marking the end of the rainy season, held each year in late September or early October.
October to May is dry and sunny. The weeks after the rains, in September and October, are the greenest, and October to March is best for migratory birds.
| Period | What to expect |
|---|---|
| October to March | Dry, clear and good for birds. |
| Late September to early October | Green landscape and the Irreecha festival. |
| June to August | Rainy season; still fine for resorts. |
Bishoftu is about 45 kilometres from Addis Ababa. Take the Addis Ababa to Adama expressway and exit at Bishoftu; the drive takes 45 minutes to an hour from central Addis or Bole. A private car with driver is the easiest way to move between the different lakes.
A day trip covers two or three lakes and lunch by the water. Stay overnight if you want a resort break or an early birding walk.
| Trip type | Suggested time |
|---|---|
| Day trip | Two or three lakes and lunch. |
| Overnight | Resort stay and sunrise on the crater rim. |
| Road trip stop | First stop heading south to the Rift Valley. |
Bishoftu has several resorts directly on the crater lakes, from large spa resorts to smaller lakeside hotels. It is also easy to return to Addis Ababa the same evening.
Bring comfortable shoes for crater rim paths, sun protection, binoculars and a light jacket for the evening.
Bishoftu is a busy, well-connected town on the main expressway. Crater rims can be steep, so keep children close and avoid walking edges after rain. During Irreecha, crowds are extremely large; go with a local guide. Check current government advice for the surrounding zone before travelling.
Continue south along the Rift Valley to Lake Ziway, Abijatta Shalla and Hawassa, or east to Adama, Sodere hot springs and Awash National Park.
There are five main crater lakes: Bishoftu, Hora, Bishoftu Guda, Kuriftu and the seasonal Cheleklaka, with others such as Babogaya nearby.
About 45 kilometres, or 45 minutes to an hour by expressway.
Yes. Bishoftu is the official Oromo name; Debre Zeyit is the older Amharic name.
