Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Railway city of the east, with colourful markets and the gateway to Harar.
Dire Dawa is one of Ethiopia's largest cities and a chartered city in the east of the country, about 500 kilometres east of Addis Ababa by road. It grew up around the Ethiopia-Djibouti railway and is the usual gateway to Harar.
Dire Dawa is a hot, lowland city with wide tree-lined streets, an old railway quarter and busy markets. The Kefira market draws traders from the surrounding countryside, and the colonial-era railway station and older buildings recall the city’s origins. Its airport is the main entry point for visitors heading to the walled city of Harar, about an hour away.
Dire Dawa is where most travellers arrive for Harar, and it is worth a few hours in its own right for the markets and the distinctive railway-town atmosphere, quite different from the highland cities. It also connects to the modern Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway.
Dire Dawa was founded in the early 1900s when the railway from Djibouti reached the area, and the town grew as a trading and transport hub between the coast and the highlands. The original line was replaced by the electric Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway, opened in 2016.
Dire Dawa is hot most of the year. The cooler months from November to February are the most comfortable for walking around the city and visiting Harar.
| Period | What to expect |
