Overview

This two-week trip of Ethiopia’s birding highlights this exceptional nation, home to the majority of its rare species. It is possible to expect up to 500 different species of birds and other uncommon creatures, and birding is remarkably easy. Ethiopia is among the most rewarding places in Africa to go photography. We will visit the enormous, bird-rich Rift Valley lakes, the moss-covered montane forests that are home to a diverse range of endemic species, the high Bale Mountains, which are home to the critically endangered Ethiopian Wolf, the striking Jemma Valley, and Awash National Park.

Abyssinian Hare, Bale Monkeys, Beisa Oryx, Ethiopian Wolf, Gambian Sun Squirrel, Gelada baboons, Giant Mole Rat, Golden Wolves, Guenther’s Dikdik, Hamadryas Baboons, Lesser Kudu, Mountain Nyala, Serval, Soemmerring’s Gazelle; Somali Dwarf Mongoose, Spotted Hyena Unstriped Ground Squirrel, and more are the potential mammals to be recorded in this tour plan.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa

Upon arrival at Bole International Airport, you will be greeted by your guide and transferred to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day at leisure, exploring the capital city. Birds such as Black-headed Siskin, Abyssinian Slaty Flycatcher, Thick-billed Raven, White-collared Pigeon, the Abyssinian Longclaw, Black-winged Lovebird, and further more likely to be seen in Addis Ababa.

Day 2: Addis Ababa - Awash National Park

After breakfast, drive to Awash National Park, known for its diverse, but endangered birdlife and wildlife. Upon arrival, check into a lodge and embark on an afternoon birding excursion in the park. On your way to the majestic Bale Mountain National Park, look out for species like the Abyssinian roller, Abyssinian ground hornbill, and the endemic yellow-throated seedeater,  

Day 3: Awash National Park

Spend the whole day exploring Awash National Park, with morning and afternoon birding walks and game drives. Keep an eye out for the somber rock chat, white-billed starling, and the rare Arabian bustard.

Day 4: Awash National Park - Bale Mountains National Park

Drive to Bale Mountains National Park, famous for its high-altitude landscapes and unique wildlife.  Moorland Francolin, Wattled Crane, the abyssinian Owl, African Wood Owl, Wattled Ibis, Chestnut-naped Francolin, Red-billed Chough, White-backed Black Tit, Abyssinian Catbird, African Emerald Cuckoo, Abyssinian Crimsonwing, and much more.

Day 5: Bale Mountains National Park

Embark on a full-day birding excursion in Bale Mountains National Park. Explore Harenna Forest and Sanetti Plateau, home to endemic species like the Ethiopian wolf, Abyssinian catbird, and the stunning wattled ibis.

Day 6: Bale Mountains National Park - Negele

Drive to Negele, a town located in the southern part of Ethiopia. En route, stop at various birding spots to observe species like the white-tailed swallow, red-naped bushshrike, and the endemic Sidamo lark. This area is the best place to encounter the endemic Ruspoli’s Turaco.

Day 7: Negele - Yabelo Wildlife Sanctuary

Continue your journey to Yabelo Wildlife Sanctuary, a haven for birdwatchers. Spend the day exploring the sanctuary, searching for species such as the white-tailed swallow, Somali courser, and the endemic Stresemann’s bush crow. 

Day 8: Yabelo Wildlife Sanctuary

Enjoy a full day of birding in Yabelo Wildlife Sanctuary, visiting different habitats and observing species like the Somali ostrich, vulturine guineafowl, and the endemic white-tailed swallow. This sanctuary is a home to Burchell’s zebras, Gerenuks, Grant’s Gazelles, Beisa oryxes, Günther’s dik-diks, Ethiopian hare, Greater kudu, Lesser kudu, warthog, lion, leopard, cheetah, African wild dog, golden jackal, serval cat, and more.

Day 9: Yabelo - Lake Awassa

Drive to Lake Awassa, one of the Rift Valley lakes known for its abundant birdlife. Upon arrival, check into a lakeside lodge and embark on an afternoon birding excursion around the lake. Look out for species like the African pygmy kingfisher, purple heron, and the endemic Sidamo longclaw.

Day 10: Lake Awassa - Lake Langano

After breakfast, drive to Lake Langano, another stunning Rift Valley lake. Check into a lakeside resort and spend the afternoon birding along the lakeshore. Species you may encounter include the African fish eagle, African jacana, and the endemic Abyssinian ground hornbill.

Day 11: Lake Langano - Lake Abijata - Lake Ziway

Drive to Lake Abijatta-Shalla National Park, known for its diverse birdlife. Explore both Lake Abijatta and Lake Shalla, observing species like flamingos, great white pelicans, and the endemic Ethiopian cisticola. Continue to Lake Ziway for the overnight.

Day 12: Lake Ziway - Debre Libanos - Addis Ababa

After breakfast, drive to Debre Libanos, a monastery known for its religious significance and breathtaking views. Explore the monastery and nearby cliffs where you may spot the endemic white-winged cliff chat and rüppell’s chat. Return to Addis Ababa for the overnight.

Day 13: Explore the beauty of Addis Ababa - Culture and History

Spend the day exploring Addis Ababa, visiting attractions like the National Museum, Holy Trinity Cathedral, and the colorful Mercato market. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner with traditional Ethiopian music and dance.

Day 14: Departure

Transfer to Bole International Airport for your departure flight, carrying with you unforgettable memories of Ethiopia’s rich birdlife and wildlife.
