About The Tour

Danakil Depression

The Lowest Point On Earth

Overview

The northern Ethiopian region of Afar is home to the Danakil Depression. There are numerous reasons why this is one of Ethiopia’s most popular tourist destinations, including sulfur lakes, camel caravans, and active volcanoes. There is also a permanent lava lake, Erta Ale. Situated 410 feet (125 meters) below sea level, this location is among the lowest on the planet. Over 120 degrees Fahrenheit is the extreme temperature. Ethiopia should be visited for the Danakil Depression’s peculiar terrain alone.

Although a three-day tour is an option, the tour usually lasts four days. All tours start and finish in Mekele. Groups might consist of a single car or convoys of multiple cars. The salt mining production, Lake Assale, and the camel caravan would all be dropped off over a three-day excursion.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa then Connecting a flight to Mekele – Afdera

Your international flight arrives in Addis Ababa then you will connect an hour flight to Mekele. You will leave Mekele and go to Lake Afdera on the first day. The Danakil Depression is one of the world’s most remarkable and utterly hostile places. We will travel 220 km on an asphalt road for 4 hours to begin this trip, stopping occasionally for coffee with the locals and lunch that we will make ourselves.

The terrain begins to dry out and become sparsely populated, with very few people seen along the route. After a 15-minute stroll from Lake Afdera, we will arrive in the nearby settlement of Afdera. After that, you’ll stop over to tour it and have another coffee or soda with the locals.

After that, proceed to Lake Afdera, our campsite and the destination of our journey today. You’ll take a swim as the sun sets, float on the briny lake’s surface, take advantage of the neighboring hot springs, and take in the breathtaking scenery. After that, you’ll enjoy dinner over a campfire and then drift off to sleep under the stars. Camping for the night.

Day 2: Erta Ale Volcano

The goal for today is to drive to the Erta Ale volcano’s base camp. Visit the nearby Afar salt miners after breakfast at the lake. To make a salt crust, they pump salt water over the surface and allow it to evaporate. After that, begin a 100-kilometer trip via chilly lava rocks and sandy terrain. You will stop for lunch in Dodom village en route, where you will be surrounded by numerous locals. Here, we also need to present our authorization to ascend Erta Ale, often referred to as the Smoking Mountain.

While traveling through various sand dunes and sceneries made of solidified lava rocks. After passing through a few tiny settlements strewn throughout this desolate area, you will reach the Erta Ale camping area. After trekking to the summit of Erta Ale volcano at dusk, we will spend a few hours viewing the animations of streaming lava, or the actions of the boiling lava. At 613 meters above sea level, Erta Ale is home to one of the active lava lakes in the world. In addition, it is remarkable for being the longest-lasting lava lake that has been there since the early 1900s. You will then make your way back to the basic camp for dinner and a night spent either in a hut or outside under the stars.

Day 3: Erta Ale – Hamad Ela

Make your way back to the crater’s summit early on this day to witness the volcanic activity once more as the sun rises. Then, starting at 7:00 am, make your way back down to the campsite for breakfast by descending from the top of the crater. After breakfast, begin your five-hour drive to Hamad Ela. Along the journey, take a picnic lunch beneath a palm tree canopy. Next, begin your tour to Hamad Ela village, which has a population of approximately 500, to observe the way of life of the Afar community. Lastly, continue to Salt Lake Asale, a sizable saline lake where you can swim in a saltwater natural pool. Overnight camping in Hamed Ela.

Day 4: Hamad Ela- Dallol Depression- Mekele

After waking up early, we headed to Dallol, which is renowned for its fumaroles, tiny spewing acid springs, and lakes that give off different shades of acid. Dallol is also regarded as the hottest spot on Earth at the same time. Its amazing colors give you the impression that you are on Mars. Traveling to many locations on Earth formed by volcanic activity, such as the oily lakes and salt mountain, can give you a unique experience. After lunch, return to Hamad Ela by car and continue on to Mekelle. After that, take a late afternoon flight back to Addis Ababa, where you will spend your last evening and goodbye meal before heading home.
